Summary

Advanced materials and emerging technologies are touted as providing the potential for expanded worldwide markets and as creating a new viability for major industry sectors. Materials and technology research and development provide these “enabling opportunities.” However, the commercial potential offered by new materials and technology advances requires an identification of their costs of production, substitution potential, and any benefits offered by enhanced performance in order to be fully understood. Yet, traditional economic evaluations are limited by the rapid pace of new technology development that precludes an evaluation based on historical price and market trend analysis.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an analytical framework to: assist in the identification of significant emerging technologies, evaluate the costs associated with advanced material fabrication, measure the value of enhanced performance, and quantify the potential “value” of the technology to the marketplace. The framework will be presented with case studies to illustrate its application to advanced material fabrication technologies and specific markets.
