The physical, mechanical, and electrical properties of a number of foreign and domestic dielectric fibers are being characterized at GTRI to form a unified comparative database. Physical properties evaluated include: fiber diameter, density, and thermal expansion. Strength measurements were obtained based on ASTM D-3379-7 at room temperature and elevated temperatures. Retained strength was measured after exposure to 1400°C in an argon atmosphere. Elastic modulus was calculated from room temperature data at gauge lengths of 5, 10 and 15 cm. Electrical measurements include ambient and elevated temperature permittivity at a frequencies of 2-18 GHz.
