Control of the matrix-reinforcement interface characteristics is essential in optimizing the mechanical properties of ceramic matrix composites. Physical coatings on whiskers are potentially useful in controlling the chemical interaction or bonding between the two phases. Whisker toughening mechanisms in ceramic matrix composites depend on a relatively weak bond between the matrix and the reinforcing whisker. Several processes were used to coat silicon carbide whiskers with various polymeric, carbon, boron nitride, and titanium nitride coatings. The morphologies of the coatings formed were characterized using SEM and TEM. The composition of the coatings was also characterized by chemical means. The relative advantages of the coating processes are presented with respect to the coatings formed.
