Summary

Silicon carbide whisker reinforcements have been used to improve the mechanical properties of a number of ceramic materials. In the case of AIN based composites however, interactions between the components often result in loss of the whisker morphology and therefore, no increase in mechanical performance.

AIN-SiCw composites have been successfully prepared by proper selection of the system components. Factors affecting the stability of SiCw in AIN are discussed, as well as the effect of whisker surface coatings as a reaction barrier.
