Refractory oxide coatings on silicon-based ceramics is a promising approach to improve the environmental durability of silicon-based ceramics. The long-term durability of mullite-coated silicon-based ceramic was investigated by cyclic oxidation between RT and 1200–1400°C in air. A newly developed, fully-crystalline mullite coating substantially reduced the cyclic oxidation rate of the underlying Sic substrate. Limited reaction between the mullite coating and silica scale was observed, which is not expected to cause any long-term chemical instability.
