Summary

A new family of silicon nitride-based ceramics is being developed for applications in diesel engines. These composite ceramics are characterized by low thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, high strength, and high oxidation resistance. Properties may be tailored widely by adjusting the cordierite/silicon nitride ratio and/or the crystallinity of the cordierite phase.
