Summary

Si3N4 matrix-SiC whisker composites with short fiber contents ranging from 10 to 40 vol% were hot pressed at 1600° to 1850°C to high densities. Room temperature fracture toughness values up to 125 MPa-m1/2 with only slight reduction in fracture strength were observed. Effects of processing parameters were discussed. A manuscript is in preparation for the Journal of the American Ceramic Society.
