Summary

The method of measurement or analysis is not perfectly repeatable and the material is not perfectly homogeneous so repeat analyses and samples will differ among themselves. One needs to carry out multiple measurements or analyses on more than one sample from a rational subgroup in order to estimate the two types of errors that arise due to analysis and sampling. Techniques are presented by which variations associated with defined sources may be isolated and estimated.
