Recent developments in the understanding of the wear mechanisms of blast furnace refractories, and in laboratory testing methods, have been applied to the improvement of the resistance to alkali attack of silicon nitride-bonded silicon carbide refractories. Further work has led to the development of a SiC refractory bonded with a system consisting predominantly of a sialon phase, exhibiting enhanced physical properties and exceptional resistance to alkali attack and to the combined effects of oxidation and alkali aggression.
