Summary

The paper gives a brief history of jorehearth instrumentation from initial thermocouples to optical sensors. Recently the thermocouple has made a comeback in different form because the optical sensors measure only the top surface temperature and because of the need for temperature measurement in depth. Analog instruments are being replaced with microprocessor-equipped instruments and complete computer control systems.
