Summary

Alumina-SiC whisker composites were fabricated by conventional powder processing techniques and densified by either hot pressing or pressureless sintering. Thermal shock resistance, oxidation behavior, fracture strength, and fracture toughness of the composites were determined. The development of alumina-SiC whisker composites for automotive applications is proceeding. At the present time, substantial improvements in the fracture toughness and strength compared to monolithic alumina have been demonstrated.
