Summary

Synthesis of high purify, sinterable silicon nitride powders is part of the Ceramic Technology for Advanced Heat Engines program.' A key objective of this program task is to demonstrate process control of particle size of relatively equiaxed silicon nitride from a liquid precursor. To meet the special needs of vehicular applications, this process study is directed towards a modification of the low-temperature reaction of SiCI4 with liquid NH3 which is characterized (1) by absence of organics (a source of carbon contamination), and (2) by pressurization (for improved by-product extraction efficiency). A preliminary heat balance has been completed.
