Summary

Silicon carbide in various forms is being considered as a primary, high temperature reinforcing phase in ceramic-ceramic composites. The oxidation resistance of the reinforcement phase may depend on the type of matrix phase used. Calculations of the oxidation rate constants have been made utilizing literature data on grain boundary and bulk diffusion in the matrix material. Predicted oxidation rates compare favorably with experimental observations.
