The objective of air traffic management is to mitigate imbalances between the demand for air traffic services and the capacity of the air transportation system, so as to ensure that aircraft can flow through the airspace safely and efficiently. This article outlines the principal optimization models that have been proposed to provide decision support within air traffic management, and describes the trade-offs and challenges that arise in this environment.
