Induced abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy and is subcategorized into therapeutic and elective. Therapeutic abortion is performed following medical advisement in order to save the life of the pregnant woman, preserve the woman's physical or mental health, prevent the birth of a child with a congenital disorder that would be fatal or associated with significant morbidity, or selectively reduce the number of fetuses to lessen health risks associated with multiple conceptions. Elective abortion is the termination of a pregnancy performed for any other reason.
