The major parts of a neuron or nerve cell include the dendrites, the cell body, and the axon, which is a single, relatively long process extending away from the cell body. The neuron typically receives information from neighboring neurons through chemical substances called neurotransmitters that are released near the dendrites and cell body. The neuron may relay this information to other neurons by the nerve impulse, which is a characteristic of the axon.
