Autistic disorder is an Axis I clinical disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000) and is one of three autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in this diagnostic system. The current diagnostic criteria for ASDs are those listed in the DSM-IV-TR; however, it is likely that these criteria may undergo changes in the upcoming DSM V, based on a growing research literature suggesting that autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, and pervasive developmental disorders-NOS (not otherwise specified) represent points on a severity continuum that run in the same families, rather than being qualitatively distinct conditions.
