In 1938, Lauretta Bender published her groundbreaking monograph, A Visual Motor Gestalt Test and Its Clinical Use. Over time, the Visual-Motor Gestalt Test, more commonly referred to as the Bender-Gestalt Test, became a “mainstay in the assessment battery…as an assessment tool in appraisal of intelligence…as a screening technique for neuropsychological dysfunction, as a clinical tool for sampling visual-motor proficiency, and as a standard projective technique in the assessment of personality” (Piotrowski, 1995, p. 1272).
