The widespread consumption of caffeine is a relatively recent phenomenon in human history. European colonization in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries led to coffee and tea being transported around the world, and this process of dissemination proved to be extraordinarily successful. Caffeine has come to be the most widely used psychoactive substance in history, with more than 80% of people worldwide now consuming the drug daily (James, 1997).
