The term career development has several meanings. At one level it is the term used to describe the large body of theory and research that serves as the knowledge base for career counselors and psychologists. This knowledge base identifies the factors, both internal to the individual and external in the environment, that interact across the life span as individuals forge their personal career identity, acquire work-related behaviors, anticipate and explore career options, adjust to the settings in which their work-related behavior is implemented, and manage the interaction of career and family roles.
