Child abuse and child neglect are the two forms of child maltreatment. Both hurt children: abuse through deliberate action and neglect through omission of necessary action. Because of the pioneering work of thousands of professionals and lay people over the past half century, child abuse is now often (but not always) recognized and reported. As a result, children who are physically beaten, sexually exploited, and otherwise harmed are noticed and sometimes rescued.
