Cognitive-behavioral therapy is among the most influential theories in psychology today. The foundation of this theory is the idea that the person plays a key role in controlling his or her own emotional well-being and health. According to cognitive behavioral theory, adaptational outcomes are in part a function of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that ameliorate or exacerbate psychological distress. To the extent that maladaptive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are learned, they can also be unlearned or replaced.
