Morton Deutsch was born, prematurely, in 1920 into a middle-class family in New York City, the last of four sons. He was always eager to be more advanced than his age, so he skipped grades through elementary and high school and entered the City College of New York (CCNY) at the age of 15. He began as a pre-med major with the idea of becoming a psychiatrist. However, after dissecting a pig in biology lab, he switched to psychology. While at college, he was deeply immersed in a student culture that highly valued Marx, Freud, the scientific method, and political activism.
