Enuresis is the technical term used for the regular passage of urine into locations other than those specifically designed for that purpose. The diagnostic criteria in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000) include repeated voiding of urine into clothing or bed at least twice a week for at least three months. If the frequency is less than that but the voiding is a cause of significant distress or impairment to social, academic, or occupational functioning, it satisfies diagnostic criteria.
