The term epilepsy is derived from the Greek word epilambabein, meaning “to attack.” It is defined by repetitive abnormal cerebral neuron firing that may or may not be accompanied by a disturbance of consciousness or an alteration in perceptual motor functioning. Recurrent seizures are a required manifestation of epilepsy.
