Exhibitionism is a psychological disorder listed within the category of sexual disturbances called “paraphilias” in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Exhibitionism is characterized by “recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving the exposure of one's genitals to an unsuspecting stranger” (p. 569) that persist over a period of at least six months. A person must have acted on these urges, or the urges or fantasies must cause distress or impairment for the person to be diagnosed with the disorder.
