The most basic experimental design is the one-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA). Here there is one continuous dependent variable and one categorical independent variable or factor with two or more levels. For example, to what extent do different therapies (levels of a treatment factor) result in differential recovery from a psychological condition (dependent variable)?
