Abstract

Arguing that mental health and mental illness are not merely opposite ends of one single measurement continuum, Keyes (2002, 2005, 2006) proposes that mental health should be viewed as a complete state consisting of two dimensions: (1) the mental illness continuum and (2) the mental health continuum. Furthermore, symptoms of mental health consist of individuals' subjective well-being, which in turn reflects their perceptions and evaluations of their lives in terms of their affective states and their psychological and social functioning.
