Abstract

It is now universally recognized that γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), synthesized by the two molecular forms of glutamix acid decarboxylase (GAD65 or 67) and expressed in neurons, functions as a key neurotransmitter in creatures ranging from crustaceans to mammals. In the brains of vertebrates, GABA mediates synaptic inhibitory events by binding to specific recognition sites located in various members of a pentameric protein family, including a transmembrane anion channel, which is termed GABA.
