Geropsychology is the “specialized field of psychology concerned with the psychological and behavioral aspects of aging” (Tuleya, 2007). Early uses of the term include a chapter in the Annual Review of Psychology in 1970 (Botwinick, 1970) and a book title for the summary of a conference at Duke University in 1974 (Gentry, 1977). Although the conceptual and scientific roots of geropsychology extend back for centuries, the explosion of empirical research that defines the field escalated rapidly during the second half of the twentieth century. The term geropsychology was not widely adopted until the latter decades of the twentieth century, however. The Psychological Literature database first adopted it as a keyword in 2006 and applied it retrospectively to previous entries (Tuleya, 2007).
