The study of happiness has long been a playground for philosophical speculation. However, lack of empirical measures of happiness prevented evaluation of the validity of propositions about the matter. In the late twentieth century, survey-research methods introduced by the social sciences brought a breakthrough, in the form of dependable measures of happiness that have provided a significant body of knowledge.
