Ever since Scoville and Milner's 1957 report of the patient H.M., who suffered a profound amnesia following bilateral surgical resection of the medial temporal lobe, it has been clear that the hippocampal region of the brain plays a critical role in memory. There is now considerable knowledge about the anatomical pathways of the hippocampus, about the functional role of the hippocampal region, and about the information encoded by firing patterns of hippocampal neurons.
