The term hyperactivity refers to both a symptom associated with a variety of medical and behavioral disorders and a common psychopathological syndrome. A range of related terms are often treated interchangeably, including overactivity, hyperkinesis, minimal brain dysfunction, attention deficit disorder and attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder. This discussion addresses hyperactivity as a descriptor, symptom, and syndrome, emphasizing the disorder currently called attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder.
