Insight-oriented psychotherapy is not a single method of psychotherapy; rather, it represents a category of psychotherapeutic approaches that share a common assumption about psychopathology and its treatment. These forms of therapy assume that an individual's behavior is disturbed in some way due to a lack of awareness of his or her motivations underlying it. Psychotherapy, then, involves the elucidation of a person's internal motivations and the development of a better sense of awareness and self-understanding, in order to facilitate more adaptive behavior and courses of action in his or her life.
