It is doubtful whether an increased tolerance for sadism and masochism (S&M) in the sexual behavior of daily life has led to any greater understanding of the phenomenon of masochism. A rather simplistic definition in a medical encyclopedia runs as follows: a glandular insufficiency, especially of the gonads and adrenals, demanding the stimulation of pain before the subject is able to react to sexual stimuli.
