Since its founding in 1863, the United States National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has served as both an honorific association of distinguished American and international scientists and as an autonomous, nonprofit organization providing independent advice on science and technology to government agencies. The NAS has provided such advice from the beginning of its existence and in conformity to the terms of its charter, which states that it will advise the federal government on scientific and technological matters whenever called upon.
