Research in developmental neuropsychology first started because it was believed that children are neurologically simpler than adults and would provide clearer data as to the relationship between brain function and behavior. This turned out to be a somewhat simplistic view, and the study of the developing nervous system quickly raised a number of important new questions, such as “Why does the young brain appear to be so flexible in compensating for injury?” and “How do environmental factors influence the developing brain?” In addressing such questions, we must first provide an overview of the neural developmental process.
