Over the past three decades, the prevalence of obesity in the United States has increased at an alarming rate: almost one-third of the adult population is now obese. The seriousness of this phenomenon is highlighted by the fact that in the United States 5 of the 10 leading causes of death are directly linked to obesity. Excess body weight increases morbidity, decreases life expectancy, and diminishes quality of life. We summarize the scope and seriousness of the obesity epidemic, and we describe the effectiveness of behavioral and pharmacological interventions for the management of obesity.
