The study of sex and gender differences in psychology has a long and distinguished history. However, a field of psychology explicitly devoted to the study of the psychology of men is a relatively recent development. Beginning as a response to the feminist critique of traditional gender roles that gained prominence in the late 1960s, the psychology of men is now an established specialization within developmental, clinical, and counseling psychology. The American Psychological Association has established a division, the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity, devoted to this psychology of men. In addition, a number of national organizations, such as the National Organization of Men against Sexism, have sections and interest groups devoted to issues pertaining to the psychology of men.
