Abstract

Relationship psychotherapy refers to the systems of psychotherapy in which the relationship between the psychotherapist and the patient forms the curative essence. Often termed interpersonal psychotherapy, its modern origins can be traced to Harry Stack Sullivan (Evans, 1996; Sullivan, 1953). The core of Sullivan's work is presented here, followed by brief reviews of the main contributors to relationship or interpersonal psychotherapy.
