Two important traditions of clinical and experimental research played a decisive role in the development of psychology in Russia. Psychiatrists established most of the early psychological laboratories to serve the needs of psychiatric patients and to facilitate clinical research. V. Bekhterev inaugurated the first laboratory at the Kazan University clinic in 1886, soon followed by laboratories in other psychiatric clinics. Bekhterev founded the journal Review of Psychiatry, Neuropathology, and Experimental Psychology in 1896, and in 1907, he founded the Psychoneurological Institute in St. Petersburg, which is currently named the Bekhterev Research Psychoneurological Institute and is the leading center for medical (clinical) psychology in Russia.
