In 1965, Wiesel and Hubel reported that kittens deprived of visual input in the first few months of life showed marked abnormalities in the organization of visual cortex and behaved as if they were still blind once visual input was restored. Since then a large body of animal research has documented the importance of sensory experience in the development of normal sensory processing.
