The term homosexual refers to private behavior, the term gay to public behavior and association with a subculture. Although the majority of individuals who engage in homosexually oriented activities are probably closeted and unrecognized, others are open about their sexual preferences and desires. They may or may not be identified by mannerisms and activities. Observable traits can be effeminate ones by males or masculine ones by females. These may be natural expressions of the self or part of highly formalized codes that signal group identity. It is unknown what proportion of such persons can be so identified unless they want to be.
