Optimal sexuality occupies a paradoxical place in the public consciousness: Everybody seems to want more and better sex, as is evident in popular culture (e.g., magazine headlines, television talk shows, the Internet). However, few lay or professional persons have any idea as to what that would actually look like or how to attain it. There is very little emphasis within psychology in general and sexology in particular on optimal experience (Mahrer, 2008). At present, despite the plethora of ill-conceived advice about how to achieve great sex in the mass media, there is a lack of clinical knowledge and in-depth public discourse concerning the nature of optimal sexuality.
Keywords: human sexuality; great sex; optimal sexuality; peak experiences; eroticism
