The introduction of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) in 1949 marked the beginning of the modern era of personality assessment. This scale was the first to utilize many of the major conceptual and empirical methods that have come to characterize contemporary personality scale development. Its developer, Raymond B. Cattell, was a pioneer in the field and helped to set the criteria by which future assessment endeavors would be evaluated. This article provides an overview of the 16PF and its applications in and implications for contemporary assessment.
