There have been important advances in knowledge on many of the functions of human sleep. For example, it is increasingly evident that sleep plays a critical role in many domains of health and psychological functioning. Hence, sleep disorders have become a significant public health concern. It is estimated that the direct medical costs of insomnia alone are $13.9 billion each year, with indirect costs such as missing work nearly doubling that cost (Walsh & Engelhardt, 1999).
