Since its official recognition in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) in 1980, social phobia has been the subject of much empirical study. One of the most common disorders in the general population, social phobia is characterized by extreme social reticence, social isolation, social avoidance, and difficulty in social interaction. This article surveys the clinical syndrome, etiology, and treatment options for this chronic and debilitating disorder.
