The Society of Clinical Psychology (SCP) was established as Division 12 of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 1948 and has been organized as a society since 1997. SCP grew in time to become the largest and most diverse APA division, with more than 6,900 members representing a broad range of primary interests, professional activities, theoretical orientations, and work settings. The society decreased in size to its present membership of 4,300 after two of its sections split off to become separate APA divisions in child and adolescent psychology (Division 53) and pediatric psychology (Division 54).
