Sociology is the social scientific study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior (American Sociological Association, 2006). For sociologists, the lives of individuals can be understood only through the social contexts in which they live. By focusing on the social patterns and societal forces that shape people, sociology looks beyond individual psychology and unique events to the predictable broad patterns and regular occurrences of social life that influence our individual destinies.
