Abstract

Splitting is a psychoanalytic concept that connotes a process of organizing mental contents by separating them into categories in which reality is partly accepted and partly dismissed; the categories are often contradictory. Definitions of splitting have varied, as have opinions regarding the areas and functions of the mind that might be involved in the process. A few essentials are offered here.
